HOT CHOCOLATE AND BOOK TALKS

ALESIA  &  ANDREEA

I was so excited when it as announced that Red Queen won the 2015 Goodreads Choice Awards for the

best Debut Author.  For years I have stared at the list of winners not recognizing any of the titles, that to have a

book I’ve read and loved among them is so mind-blowing I started to jump up and down like the crazy person I

am.

Red Queen takes place in a world divided by blood. So we have the Silvers, with obviously silver blood,

they are the elite, the rich and the nobility, they also have super bad-ass powers, like telekinesis, to control fire

or water, but they tend to be quite mean and spoiled. On the other side, we have the Reds, these people are

basically the slaves to the Silvers, they have no powers what so ever and red blood. And then there is Mare

Barrow, a 17 years-old girl, who, by some complicated conjuncture, ends up working at the King’s Summer

Court. There she discovers she actually has powers just like Silvers do, except she is Red. In order to cover it

up the Queen makes her pretend to be Mareena, a lost princess, the last descendent of the House of Titanos. However she risks her family’s life, as well as her freedom and heart, to aid those the Silvers seem to fear, the Scarlet Guard.

First, can we just stare at the gorgeous cover. It’s so beautiful I am going to cry. Victoria Aveyard created a story that I personally will never forget. She wrote an universe where you could get lost into, where you can’t trust anyone close enough to hurt you. Her writing was exceptional, so captivating, it basically sucked me in the book (I’ve read most of it in the plane, even though my hands where freezing, that’s how awesome it is).  And the major plot twist and betrayal at the end of the book? I didn’t see it coming, like I usually do, those who have read the book know what I’m talking about. Don’t worry; I won’t ruin it for you.

Mare’s character develops throughout the whole book, she becomes from this little girl who knew the hardships of being Red and a thief, to the women who finally knows who she  is and how  bitter betrayal feels. Romance isn’t really the focus of this book, there is some love thrown in there, but not enough to overcome the action in it.

For those reasons you’ve just read and many others that I wouldn’t have enough pages to rant, I highly and wholeheartedly recommend this book to all of you guys and girls out there. Honestly, I think you should go to your local bookstore and buy it, or buy it online, whatever floats your boat.

Now, if you have not read the book yet, then I would stop reading here, this is here the treasure of spoilers lie. For real though, stop here if you do not want to be spoiled, pick up the book and when you are done, you can join in on the fun stuff, the Book Talk.

Oh my Jesus, this book is just fiction on another level. If you didn’t figure it out so far, I gave it 5 stars on Goodreads.

Okay, let’s cut to the epic finale. I mean did you see it coming? I thought for a second that the betrayal could be from Maven, but I quickly dismissed the thought, because he played the love struck and cute prince so well. I did expect it from Queen Bitchy, but Maven? I guess, the apple didn’t fell that far from the tree. I was actually starting to like Mare and Maven together, but the ship has long died in the burning flames of Maven’s evil actions.

Okay, I understand him playing Mare so well, but lying to his own brother (step-brother, but you get the point) that just makes me angry. I want his head on a stake people! Who’s with me? At the same time, I have to admire how well Victoria built him; he is the perfect evil psychopath. Can you imagine living in a world where he would be the king; it would be hell on Earth.

Honestly a long time has passed since a book got me so excited my toes were curled inwards. Anyway Mare’s love life was so confusing, I didn’t know who to ship anymore, well that is until the end (TeamCal forever).

And also, I think Glass Sword, the next novel in this series is going to be emotional, because we have Shade, Mare’s officially dead brother who has powers like her. And hopefully there are going to be more Cal and Mare moments.

So did you like Red Queen? Are you TeamCal or do you still think there is hope for Maven? And did you anticipate what the plot twist was going to be? I would like to know.
