HOT CHOCOLATE AND BOOK TALKS

ALESIA  &  ANDREEA

Red Rising-Pierce Brown

by Andreea

Red Rising is the first of Pierce's Brown's SF trilogy with the same name. It is set

in a society based on colors, from the lowest, the Reds being slaves, to the elite, the

Golds. The society in this book is quite hard to understand at first, because there is

so much action packed in the book. The action starts when Darrow's wife is executed

and he joins a rebel group to take down the people that killed her, the Golds, and

free the Reds from slavery.

Darrow, a Red, has to go through intensive transformations to become a Gold and infiltrate the Institute, and then the Gold society.

I felt that this book is so unique ad different at least, in my opinion, because of the atmosphere in the book, it is so much gruesome and bloody than any book I've ever read. It is so strange that I like a book like this, but for some reason I loved it.

The character is this series are so nicely created, besides Darrow who evolves in each book, Sevro is also one of my favorites, because of the amount of madness and personality that he has. Also, Mustang is one of my favorites. Call me crazy or a feminist, but there is something about a strong, powerful deadly beautiful female character that makes me fall in love with a book. Darrow, especially in this book is conflicted between his two desires: to be the man he wants to be for his wife and to be the man he has to be in order to get his revenge. He is definitely not the plotting or the strategic type, but more of a war machine.  He becomes the Ripper through out this book, a merciless killer in the Institute.

The writing is so captivating and unique. This is definitely the most Sci-fi novel I've read and the most gruesome. If you love love-stories or romance this probably won't be your cup of tea.

Even-though this book is not what I normally go for, guy's point of view and the gruesome factor, I was still pleasingly surprised by it. It determinate me to dive more into the Sci-fi genre and find more books like this.  What did you think of Red Rising?
